texworks.core - A required file system path could not be retrieved

New user. After downloading basic-miktex-2.9.7442-x64 to a new PC and successfully installing (it appears) to Windows 10, TeXWorks keeps crashing when I try to save a file. TeXWorks window disappears and nothing is saved. the Logfile reads:

Has anyone else experienced this? Any known solutions? I’m not off to a good start 🙁
