The title says it all.
Why did Venkman have sedatives on his date with Dana?
A syringe full of Thorazine is not a normal thing to carry, especially on a date.
The official Richard Mueller novelisation describes him hunting around in her apartment for medical supplies. Quite why she has powerful sedatives on hand isn't explained in any detail although someone who lives in "spook central" could feasibly be suffering from insomnia, hearing voices, mild paranoia or migraines, all of which are treatable with Thorazine:
Dana Barrett still floated above the bed while Peter Venkman rummaged through the drawers of her dresser. "She’s an artist", he thought. "She’s got to have some Valium somewhere."
It's worth noting that Louis was buying painkillers by the bucketload to deal with his headaches.
“I have acetylsalicylic acid but I get the generic from Walgreen’s cause I can get six hundred tablets for thirty-five percent less than the cost of three hundred of the name brand. Do you have a headache?”

I always figured Dana had some sort of psychosis diagnosis and had the Thorazine on hand to treat that. Venkman probably exaggerated the dosage when talking about it, because he's "like a game show host."

Well folks we are reading a bit much into the movie , but if we are gonna indulge in fantasy , Dr Venkman holds a degree in Psychology and para Psychology so he should have legal access to Thorazine , the why he had it on him going to date , well in the opening scene of the movie he demonstrated his deprivation by attempting to diddle a student , so his ethics were already in question , I always laughed at that scene because it’s just plain funny . The line “ she’s gonna take a nap for a while “ people she would be DEAD .
