When a charge is placed on a conductor why and how does it potential increase?
It was given in my book that when a charge is placed on a Conductor its potential increase. But why does this happen?
When you place the charge Q on the conductor, it will increase the electric field around it. Whereas electric potential is directly proportional to the electric field (E = V / r) (where r is the distance from the conductor).
E = V / r ===> V = E * r
from this expression its clear when you increase the electric field by adding charges, it will increase the electric potential as well.
