How to label the particles observed in a chamber?

Can anybody help to understand how we can label the particles in an interaction in a chamber, for example in the charmed baryon discovery,
$$ nu_mu + p -> Lambda^+ + mu^+ + pi^+ + pi^- $$
how to figure out which particle track is associated with which line in the chamber, and in this special interaction there is an elliptical like track, can anyone tell me what is that elliptical track for?
