Need some help with astro photography

Photography Asked by Valbrand on July 25, 2020

I’m from Germany so sorry if my phrasing isn’t perfect!

I’m just getting into photography and I’m interested in landscape, space and macro photography.

Because of the comet NEOWISE I tried to make some pictures during the night, but I think I’m using the wrong settings and maybe even the wrong camera (currently using my smartphone which is a Huawei Mate 20 Pro).

I made some pictures of the comet and also tried to take pictures from the Milky Way from my home.

Here are some examples: Milky Way, NEOWISE

As you can see those pictures do have a lot of noise and are not that focused. I’m also dealing with light pollution so I might just have to walk like a kilometre out of my village for a better quality.

I don’t know the exact settings I used for NEOWISE but for the Milky Way I used an ISO of 1600, Shutter time of 30 seconds, exposure compensation of +2, AF-C autofocus and automatic white balance. I also edited the Milky Way picture with Adobe Lightroom and tried to improve it (my phone has the ability to save pictures in the DNG-format).

Since I took those pictures with my phone I thought about getting a "real" camera like a Canon EOS M50, but I’m completely lost when it comes to cameras and lenses.

I hope I can get some guidance on what to look for and how to improve my pictures.

Thanks in advance!
