Non-resident? NY state and NYC taxes while living 8 months outside US

Personal Finance & Money Asked by TaxMaster on April 7, 2021

When pandemic broke out, I was outside US and stayed outside for the entire 2020. I worked remotely all time. I’ve been employed by a company with NYC headquarters.

Am I right I’m considered a non-resident for both NY state and NY city tax purposes? This would effectively mean I should claim all paid taxes back (except for federal)?

Potentially important: I rented an apartment all time because couldn’t break the lease.
