Why did Tom Hayden consider kid as a pocket protector?

In The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), at Chicago park convention meeting, Kid try to climb the pole but police officers stopped him violently, Rennie interefered, got clubbed by police officer. Later, defendant of Chicago 7 Tom Hayden describing this previous incident to lawyer Bill:

Tom Hayden: It was six armed police officers versus Rennie and a pocket protector. I can understand that response.

That's not a comparison. A pocket protector is sort of a stereotypical "geek" accessory. Like a pair of thick glasses with tape on the bridge, like Gilbert wore in Revenge Of the Nerds. He was basically saying Rennie was a weak nerd, and having 6 police officers gang up on him was overkill.
