Struts and coil springs

When I assembled my struts and coil springs I bought them separately from different manufacturers but both recommended for my vehicle.

I now have coil binding. Are all coils and struts universal? As I recall having to hammer the coils a bit to make them fit on the lower and upper lips otherwise they would slightly overlap the lips.
