Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Asked by Georgina on April 13, 2021
I bought my 2003 Peugeot 206 second hand from a private car dealer about 4 months ago and everything seemed ok, except for the exhaust pipe appearing to be tied with plastic zip locks.
About a month ago, the exhaust fell while I was driving and I tied it with some wire. There was a bit of damage- specifically a small hole in the rear box of the exhaust. I postponed going to a service due to severe economic issues, and over the last week, the car seems to have died.
First, one morning the engine wouldn’t start, and I assumed it was the battery weakened by the cold. I jump started it and was fine for a couple days after.
Then, 2 days ago I was running some errands, drove for about 30 min, all good. Then all of a sudden the emergency STOP light started flashing and the engine started gurgling and bubbling like a kettle/fountain. I stopped the car and let the engine to cool and looked at it, but all seemed clean on the surface, no leaking oil or water. I drove home because I didn’t want to be left stranded and have to pay for towing as well. The STOP light kept flashing, the temperature gauge was over the top. Barely made it home with the car starting to smell of burnt coolant or oil(not sure, but burnt). Yesterday when I tried to start the car to take it to a service, the battery seemed dead and I jump started it again, and got to drive for about a minute, then the engine completly shut down.
I know it’s a messy situation I’ve gotten myself into, but I am just wandering whether it is even worth it to take the car to a service. I paid £850 for it and I am afraid the repairs would be more than that so not worth the trouble to even get it checked. Has anyone been through sth like this? Or might have an idea of what the problems might be? Any advice would help. Thank you.
