Can you mix type A green coolant with type B green coolant?

Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Asked by Abh on February 18, 2021

I have type B green coolant in now but need to top up and bought type A not knowing there was different types. Is it possible to mix the type A green coolant with the type B green coolant? Thanks for your time!

One Answer

I was aware of the variety of colors and straight vs diluted discussions. Having never heard of Type A or Type B I googled it. Apparently Type A is the type most of us are familiar with. Type A contains additives for raising the boiling point and lowering the freezing point along with the usual chemical rust inhibitors, lubricants etc. Type B apparently has only those chemical additives but does not effect boiling freezing points. I assume you could just add the additives. Without more information it would be difficult to say for sure how much you could add. I am sure the manufacturers have a maximum and minimum level of allowable additives. There are online calculators to determine the amount to add. But you need to know the correct range and the level you are currently at.
