Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Asked on August 26, 2020
I initially had a clunking noise coming from the passenger side strut upper mount so after diagnosing this I figured it would be a good idea to get a new set of front struts, mounts and coils and replace these on my car (car was on 105k miles). This did solve the problem of the clunking. However about 4 months on now and now I am still getting a tension sort of sound from the coils whilst doing semi/full locks, this doesn’t affect the drive or handling (it seems anyway) although annoying. I didn’t take notice for a few weeks as assumed that they need to settle which obviously hasn’t occurred…
I bought the strut assembly, mounts and coil springs as individual parts so had to put it together myself and done so following the genuine Nissan Almera service manual to a tee.
After doing some research and digging around I was reading mixed views in regards to tightening and torquing the strut mount upper plate bolts (Image label A) and the lower strut steering knuckle (Image label B) which can result in issues if done whilst car was in the air as opposed to on the ground, I believe this may be my issue? None of this is/was mentioned in the Nissan Almera service manual which I found strange if that in fact is causing issues.
What is the proper procedure for replacement step by step as I am totally confused and there are so many mixed views on this? Would want to give this a go as opposed to disassembling and reassembling the whole strut assembly again…
From what I have read/understood:
Are the two points above, correct, am I missing something?
Thanks.
