2006 Hyundai Santa Fe Aircon working intermittently

I have a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe and the Aircon only seems to work on occasion. Sometimes i will turn it on and it works perfectly and other times I will turn it on and no air (hot or cold) will blow out the vents. Then a few hours later it will work again. Any ideas what might cause this?
