Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Asked by mkt160 on August 26, 2021
My son has a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7L he bought several months ago. The other day he was driving and came to a stop and the engine died, and he couldn’t get it started back. After getting it towed back to the house, we were able to start it, however it sounded bad, so cut it back off. His coolant in the reservoir was significantly lower (he filled it about 3 weeks earlier). He also did his own oil change and changed oil filter previously. After this happened, checked oil and it appeared bone dry (car not running though). Oil cap had orangish goo on it. Figured likely blown head gasket. Tried some of the head gasket sealant, put it in radiator as per instructions, let idle until it reached normal temp, then topped off coolant. Took on a short neighborhood drive (per instructions), and near the end, noticed white smoke/steam from under hood, and temp started creaping towards overheating by the time I pulled back in (vice staying in the middle of the gage). Near the end also heard more belt squeeling, previously none. Popped hood and oil was everywhere. Looked primarily like it sprayed from the oil fill cap, but hard to be conclusive on that with belts throwing it everywhere. Cap appears tight and not cross-threaded. Any thoughts? After we filled the coolant with the sealant goo, and 6 quarts of oil, it sounded infinitely better (funny how that works…). Possible there is too much oil in there? I’m about to double check the oil cap now that it has cooled off). Are there any additional troubleshooting steps we should consider?
