Why does shift-drag resizing a DateListPlot cause the line to disappear?

Start with the following plot:

DateListPlot[FinancialData["IBM", "Jan. 1, 2004"]]

I want to resize it to make it a bit wider, so I use SHIFT + Mouse1 on the right-bottom corner handle to drag it out a bit:

But the line has now vanished and the plot is a mess! What happened?
This happens in all Mathematica versions I believe so am I doing something wrong? Shift-dragging to resize works on other plots like Plot[x^2, {x, 0, 1}] for instance.
