Working on a big gravel patio project and already asked three questions here about it (1, 2, 3). Now, a third one, which may seem not so important, but if I make the wrong decision, it will be incredibly cost (if not impossible) to fix.
The image below shows U-shape driveway with a circular patio in the middle. The arrows show the direction of the downward slope. I would like the driveway to flow smoothly into the patio on the high side (bottom left). In other words, I would like it to be "level" with the driveway.
But this is where I’m stuck. Should I make it level with the shoulder of the driveway or the crown (i.e. the driveway won’t have a crown on the high side and would "flow" from the highest point directly to the patio).
This is a difference of 4" in height and thus a difference of over 10 yards of dirt. More importantly, I will be pouring concrete at the transition so if I get the height wrong I won’t be able to simply make up the difference with gravel.
So what’s the right thing to do: level with the shoulder or level with the crown, from all points of view: aesthetics, usability, drainage?
