I’ve built a new wall with a door in it, ensuring the door lining protruded a few mm beyond the plasterboard so I could skim over the plasterboard with Thistle Multifinish plaster up to the level of the door lining. Being new to plastering I was slow, and although I managed to achieve smooth enough finish on a first coat, I didn’t have time to second-coat before it went off.
Now the door lining is just under 2mm proud of the plaster.
What is my best option for fitting the architrave so it’s not just floating beyond the plaster? My thoughts are:
Can I skim over the plaster again using my ProMix Lite ready-mixed joining compound? The stuff seems to me to be more malleable, so I might stand a greater chance of getting a smooth finish given that I’m trying to just do a single coat 2mm thick (1mm in places).
If jointing compound is a bad plan, do I use a more runny Multifinish mix? And given that the original coat is set, do I need to wait a few days before doing this further coat? – how many?
Just fit architrave and use caulk to hide the gap between architrave and plaster?
Add thin wood trim behind the architrave to fill the gap between plaster and architrave?
