What is this line, how did I do and how do I delete it?

I have taken up QGIS 2.18 today and have created a map of sales territories but in doing so have somehow put a line across England. If I hide all the layers it remains in place, I can find no way of selecting it and have no idea what it is. My main aim is to remove it but any extra information (how, what, purpose etc.) would be welcome too.
