Using St_Intersects to find roads crossed on a journey

Is it feasible to make a query on a spatial database to find out how many main roads need to be crossed on a journey between two point features? I understand there is a ST_Intersects function but can this be used where the intersection is between records on one of the tables and the result of say a distance query.
