AIS KMZ layer mapCanvas auto refresh

I have a marine AIS feed that is being decoded and written to a Google Earth KMZ file using aisDispatcher software. I am trying to get QGIS 3 to update the layer automatically, but am constantly failing. I have tried the rendering/fresh layer option, but this seems to do nothing.

I’ve tried a lot of python examples, but nothing seems to update or refresh. The only thing that works to refresh is F5. To that end, I found the below to refresh in Python console:

from qgis.utils import iface
iface.mapCanvas().refreshAllLayers()

However, it is slightly outside my comfort zone to edit this to put an interval timer in to put it into a loop.
