English Language & Usage Asked on July 2, 2021
Continuing What is the plural form of "zero"? , OED says
Plural zeroes
and examples of both endings follow.
Lexico (formerly Oxford Dictionaries Online) has
Cardinal number (zeros).
My question is not about what the correct™ plural is. My question is why the Oxfordians themselves did not agree (or could not agree, or did not want to agree, or did not care about agreeing) on the plural.
EDIT: There is nothing in the question that solicits an opinion. Though many users might feel tempted to provide their own 5 cents, the use of uneducated guesses is limited. The why asks for reasons. Such reasons may, presumably, be known to some users and not known to others, including me; there is no way to a priori tell how many folks know the reasons (or whether anyone knows the reasons at all) without asking. Of course, the word “reason” lacks a precise methematical-logical definition in many language contexts, including the current one, and that’s exactly why we discuss the English language not in a mathematical forum.
