What's the origin of -sends in an email signature?

English Language & Usage Asked by Steve V. on December 29, 2020

I’ve just discovered an email record where the writer signed his name as follows:

V/R Firstname Lastname-sends

I’ve never seen this particular type of signature before. I assume V/R is "Very respectfully"[1], but what is the origin and purpose of appending "-sends" to your name in correspondence?

[1] For the purposes of this question I’m not interested in the meaning of V/R
