English Language & Usage Asked on November 9, 2020
I came across this sentence in Chinese:
在欧洲,有这么句俗话:“是名画,总要被盗的。”
Google translate translates it as:
In Europe, there is a saying: “It’s a famous painting, it must be stolen.”
Must is wrongly translated here. The sentence is probably better translated as: “If it’s a famous painting, it will always be stolen.”
I’ve never heard or seen such a phrase before. Does such a saying actually exist?
