What does it convey?....or which one is right

English Language & Usage Asked by Rutu on January 8, 2021

I waited for Him to be free.

Are both the following meanings conveyed?

  1. I waited until he got free.
  2. I waited for him so that I could get free.

How do I construct a sentence with the same structure for the second meaning?
Is it correct to say I waited for he to be free?

One Answer

I waited for him to be free means the same as I waited until he got free.

In your sentence (2), do you mean I waited for him to set me free?

No, you can't say I waited for he. He has to be the subject of the sentence.
