Is anyone bothered by the slovenly use of "based on" or "due to"?
If you don’t have a tin ear or are concerned about logical sentence construction don’t use either one unless it’s between two nouns, two things: THIS is "due to" or "based on" THAT. Saying "I did it ‘based on’ or ‘due to’…" is mangling logic: "I did it" is a locution, an action, and neither a subject nor object. If you say this, what part of "I did it" is based on whatever it’s "based on" or "due to" that follows it? Is it "I" or "did" or "it"?
A badly built house will crumble, just as, logically, this construction does. Grammar and logic, not to mention spelling, exist only to make expression clearer and more vigorous, not to annoy those who don’t think through or care about what they’re saying.
