“These years has/have been just pure fun....”

English Language & Usage Asked by aelswyn on October 8, 2020

English is my second language and I was just wondering which one is the correct one to use in this sentence.

These years has been just pure fun.

Or

These years have been just pure fun.

Thank you in advance!

One Answer

The subject is these years, which requires a plural verb, so have.

There are cases in English where there is debate about whether a verb should be singular or plural, but this isn't one of them. It's the subject that matters, not the complement.
