The correct usage of the word "saying" in the relative clauses

English Language & Usage Asked by Hidup Mati on March 4, 2021

Eg1: Each of my workers had documentation saying they didn’t have to work more than 8 hours.

Eg2: The published article saying there may be as many as 47 titles.

In the above examples, SAYING has been used as the conjunction to add more information.

I was wondering that the word saying can be used in other situations besides these examples (except documents). If so, pls explain with examples..!

One Answer

Eg2 is not a complete sentence, but in that example, it is used as a verb to make the following phrase (there maybe ...) an appositive phrase to describe the published article.

Yes. There are many ways to use "saying." It is a present tense verb that is another form of say. This mean to speak or inform of. eg. As I was saying, I am going on vacation for the next few months. Or, eg. What he is saying is that we will need a new car.
