Tense of verbs with ‘almost’

English Language & Usage Asked on April 16, 2021

Let’s assume I will be dying, and I’m near to death, but I don’t die now.

Why is ‘I almost die’ appropriate, not ‘I will almost die’? The action of death will be in the future. Is it like perfect tense?
