Starting a new sentence after quotation

English Language & Usage Asked on April 26, 2021

Is it acceptable to start a new sentence after a new sentence in the same line where a quotation just ended?

For example:

I asked the man in front of me where the meeting is about to take
place. "come in," he answered; "right here." I stepped into the room.

vs

I asked the man in front of me where the meeting is about to take
place. "come in," he answered; "right here."

I stepped into the room.
