Present perfect for historical events?

"Looking back through history during the times of the Crusades and the
Inquisition, when violence has been committed in the name of Jesus, it has been
a result of disobeying Jesus’ central command to “love your enemies”
Could you please explain the use of perfect here? I would use past simple with historical events
