past perfect or present perfect

Which of the following is correct and why?

I hadn’t observed such natural beauty until this very moment.

or

I haven’t observed such natural beauty until this very moment.

The present perfect sounds a little off. You're saying that you didn't do something from the beginning of time up to and including now and then contradicting yourself by saying that you did do that thing right now. The past perfect sounds right. You're initially saying that the first time you did something was at some unspecified time and then specifying that that time is "this very moment".
