English Language & Usage Asked by Blue Waters on January 14, 2021
Can someone help me to explain the two following structures — identifying parts of speech, and in particular why we’re using the -ing form of have in the first?
How about having lunch?
Why don’t we go for lunch?
I would explain "How about having lunch?" as shortened from
How (do you think) about having lunch?
Here "having" is gerund. After a preposition such as "about" follows a noun or a gerund which is the noun-form of a verb.
