Need help understanding should have been/was supposed to

English Language & Usage Asked by Elisabeth on April 30, 2021

I’ve been struggling to wrap my head around the overall meaning of these following sentences that I’ve read. The "should have been part" is my mental block and so is "was supposed to", especially when "instead of" is included with these modal auxiliary verbs.

May I receive some help?

It goes like this. Character 1 is saying this piece of dialogue to character 2.

Character 1: "My wish should have been granted with Maria".

*(Can also be written as) "My wish was supposed to be granted with Maria".

The newlywed life
You have to grant it instead of her.

The time for me to be with you is…not that long anymore.
It’s now or never".
