in learning basic clause patterns, why are we juxtaposing subject with verb?

In this basic clause pattern, Subject Verb Object, both subject and object are elements of a sentence, but verb is a class of word. Why don’t we rewrite this pattern to Noun Verb Noun or Subject [Verbal Element] Object? What leads to this inconsistency?
