I have only seen you around recently, friend. Are you new to the town?

English Language & Usage Asked by S93G on November 26, 2020

I am writing a dialogue between two people where one is a local resident, who has seen the second person around a few times in his town and finally asks him this question.

  • I have only seen you around recently, friend. Are you new to the town?

Just not sure about it from structural point of view. Is it correct? Or is there any other way of stating the same question?

I would say "Are you new in town?" if this is contemporary and "Are you new to town?" to age or formalize the dialogue slightly. I would only use the article "the" if I were talking about a destination city, like New York, i.e. "Are you new to the city?"

I personally use ", friend." if I'm calling someone's presence/actions into question.
