Hyphenation of compound or phrasal adjectives

English Language & Usage Asked on July 9, 2021

The following usage of hyphenation all seems correct to me, but I wanted verification that this is correct, since use of hyphenation in compound adjectives doesn’t seem to commonly follow this pattern. (Don’t worry about the meaning of "left recursive" or "left recursion"; just focus on the grammar/punctuation.)

  • Left recursion is a hard problem. [no hyphen]
  • This grammar is left recursive. [no hyphen]
  • This left-recursive grammar rule… [hyphenated]
  • In the case of non-left recursion, … [partial hyphenation only]
  • For this non-left-recursive grammar rule, … [fully hyphenated]
