English Language & Usage Asked on September 22, 2020
As far as I know, Anglo-Saxons and Jutes moved to the British Isle after sometime the Roman Empire collapsed. Therefore, there weren’t much cultural exchanges between Anglo-Saxons and the Romans who lived in modern day England.
When we look up the word liberty in Lexico, which is run by Oxford University, the dictionary says the word originates "Late Middle English from Old French liberte, from Latin libertas, from liber ‘free’."
Everything is ok so far and I assume most of Latin words that are used in modern English were derived from old French, which was based on Latin languages itself.
However, when I read the page called " Foreign language influences in English" , I see a pie chart that separates the influence of French language and Latin language, which confuses me.
Are there any "pure" French words which are not influenced by Latin or
are there that many Latin words in English that infused into English directly?
