Grateful and kindly

English Language & Usage Asked by Nate Evans on March 11, 2021

Approximately when did the adjectives, kindly and grateful (gratefully), begin to be used to describe inanimate objects and when did the use fade out of practice?

These terms were used to refer to the pleasant properties of an object, and in my case; medicine.

My examples come from one medical text. But I have found other similar examples in other medical texts. All usage I have seen occur in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
