Gerund-based heading and participle-based heading. How to make them look different?

English Language & Usage Asked by john c. j. on August 9, 2020

This is an excerpt from a table of contents of the document I am working on:

1. Directives
   1.1. Paired directives closing counterparts
   1.2. Formatting directives
   1.3. Formatting paired directives contents
2. ...
   2.1. ...
etc.

The sections 1.2 and 1.3. describes how to format directives and their contents. Formatting is a gerund.

The section 1.1. describes different aspects of the closing counterparts of paired directives. Closing is a participle.

As a whole, these 3 heading looks very awkward to me, because both gerund and adjective end with -ing, and hence it’s hard to distinguish them.

What is a possible way to fix it?
