Expression for telling someone when you're sad

English Language & Usage Asked on September 23, 2020

Is there an idiom to mean something like when you’re sad or worried and you tell someone about it. What’s it called?

Example: I am sad and I tell my friend about it. What did I do?

Thanks in advance.

One Answer

I suggest:

Get something off your chest: to tell someone about something that has been worrying you or making you feel guilty for a long time. (Cambridge English dictionary)

Example: I had spent two months worrying about it and I was glad to get it off my chest.

You could also say: to unburden yourself of something: to relieve one's mind or oneself of a worry or trouble by telling someone about it. (Collins English dictionary)

Example: Many came to unburden themselves of emotional problems.
