determining vocative commas in speech

English Language & Usage Asked on December 13, 2020

I have a question regarding vocative commas when placed at the end of a sentence.

If I said the following series of words, "I will go to the wedding chapel when I am in Las Vegas Jonathan (paused for 1-2 seconds) will I buy a ring today?" By saying Jonathan at the end of my speech or spoken word,

Which of the following choices is true?

  1. Am I stating that everything I said before Jonathan is addressed to Jonathan?
  2. Or can Jonathan just be a separate part of my speech that is independent from what I said before it?
  3. Or do we need more context to decide if what was being said was being spoken to Jonathan or if the name Jonathan was said as a separate and independent entity from what was said before it?
