English Language & Usage Asked on August 2, 2020
When I talk to people who speak not only English, but also some other language in which pronunciation of words is tied more strictly to particular letters of which the word is composed, like Russian or Ukrainian, and I need to convey the other person how a particular English word needs to be spelled, often I just read the word as it is written. Doing so, I ignore the pronunciation rules applicable in English, the whole point is to just read all as-is. The other people, unless there is some ambiguity when reading the word out loud such way, for example, q vs kv, immediately understand what the spelling is.
So rough can be said out loud as [ˈroʊɡx] and height as [ˈxeɪɡxt].
Is there a name I could use to refer to such practice, and is this common among people who only speak English?
