Confused to understand a sentence with "and"

English Language & Usage Asked on January 31, 2021

a random vertical and horizontal flipping with probability 0.5

I’m confused with the above sentence:

a) vertical flip with 0.5 prop and horizontal flip with 0.5 prop seperately
b) choose one of flip directions(vertical, horizontal) with 0.5 prop and flip

Which of the above is the correct meaning?

One Answer

It seems to me that this sentence is suggesting that the horizontal and vertical flipping is a combined action, the combined result of which has a 0.5 probability. For example, the flipping of a six-sided cube with a 1 on 3 sides and a 2 on 3 sides. If one were to flip this cube, the combined horizontal and vertical flipping would result in a .5 probability of it landing on a 1 or a 2. Hope this helps !
