As old as he looks

English Language & Usage Asked by Gladius on March 15, 2021

There is a sentence: "John isn’t as old as he looks", what does it mean:

  1. He is young, but he looks like an old man
  2. He is old, but he looks/acts like a young man

One Answer

This sentence implies: John is, in fact, younger than he looks. This means one may, based on John's appearance, make the judgement that he is old, but he isn't actually that old.
