English Language & Usage Asked on July 24, 2021
There are meanings that can be expressed by one word, like "happiness", or "envious", and others that need a phrase, like "jumping with joy" which just means "happy", or "Green with envy"
The latter are called idioms. But both single words and idioms in this case act as pointers to the same meaning. Is there a superset word in English grammar for any text (regardless of being one word or many) that points to a single meaning?
