Applying voltages to conductors in passive-matrix LCD

In the picture the horizontal and vertical lines are the conductors and the intersections are the pixel positions
I want to turn off the pixels which I’ve filled
So for that I’ve to apply an electric field across these pixels
For one pixel I have to apply voltage to conductor 1 and a
And for the other one apply voltage to 2 and b
But when these conductors are conducting ….then the pixels which I’ve shown with just a circle also get turned off.
How exactly is then an entire frame buffer drawn on the screen?
