Which condition is most likely to cause a buildup of materials in the lysosome?

Biology Asked by huloo782 on January 23, 2021

Stated below, I must answer a question related to lysosomes. I am unsure of the answer, and have explained my reasoning after the question.

Lysosomes contain hydrolytic enzymes that derive from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and work best under a pH that is different from cytoplasmic pH. These enzymes, called lysozymes, use this low pH to degrade damaged macromolecules, but they are able to spare their own protein and enzyme contents.

Which of the following conditions is likely to cause a buildup of materials in the lysosome?

A. inhibiting the protein synthesis in the ER

B. decreasing the supply of amino acids to the cell by half

C. providing the cell with more nutrients so that more protein can be made

D. having a mutation in a lysosomal proteinase that renders it more resistant to self-digestion

Reasoning: I know that A and B are strongly incorrect, as decreasing the number of proteins or the building blocks of proteins is unrelated to the toxins and waste that is built up in lysosomes. However, even though I am leaning toward D as there would be a buildup of toxins because of it, I am unsure if C would have some merit as perhaps if there is an increase in protein synthesis, there would be an increase in waste. Is my reasoning for C and D incorrect, and which answer would be the most appropriate (with explanation included, please)?
