Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1) surrogate viruses that show greatest similarity to SARS-CoV-2

Biology Asked by user1011182 on June 27, 2021

I would like to know if there are any viruses that show high similarity to SARS-CoV-2 (particularly in terms of structure) that are very safe to use (i.e., classified as BSL-1).

For example, an avian coronavirus would be good to use but it is BSL-2. Ideally, I would need BSL-1.

Ideally if there were any corona type viruses that were BSL-1 or those which have distinguishing features with proteins emanating from an outer lipid membrane similar to SARS-CoV-2 .

I am particularly interested in finding a virus with similarity to the protruding S1 spike in SARS-CoV-2 (see image)sars cov 2 image fom Glasgow Life Sciences.
