Install Ubuntu Server 20 on NVMe M.2 Dell Precision T5610

Ask Ubuntu Asked by Dale Nelson on December 3, 2021

I have a Dell Precision T5610 that I’m trying to install Ubuntu Server 20.04 on. I have a QNINE M.2 PCIe adapter for my 256GB Plextor NVMe SSD that I am installing the OS on. I’ve been using Rufus 3.11 to create a bootable disk using MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI target system at FAT32 file system and 8192 bytes cluster size.

When I press F12 to select the USB drive containing the bootable OS, it appears under the UEFI Boot section. The Ubuntu server 20.04 installer sees the NVMe SSD and installs it on there, but can’t see my 2 RAIDs or the drives to set up an LVM. When I reboot, the computer says No bootable device found.

Is there a setting in the BIOS that I need to fix for Ubuntu to boot on my Dell tower? Or is the boot disk created incorrectly? Or, am I wishing for a cutting edge OS to run on an old, imcompatible machine?
