Is it possible to use a mod in JoeQuake-GL?

I downloaded various mods such as https://www.moddb.com/mods/quake-portal-gun this portal gun mod. I tried typing -game portal-gun after extracting the folder into the directory which contains joequake-gl.exe, but it doesn’t seem to change anything. I tried various mods, and none of them resulted in any changes. I am wondering if anyone has had any success loading mods like bot mods or new gun mods with joequake-gl? If so, how is it done? I can’t register at the forums (http://forums.runecentral.com/) because of the captcha; otherwise, I would have asked there.
