Is it possible to change the dwarf fortress root directory?

When I open Dwarf Fortress under Linux, a new folder named ~/.dwarffortress is created in my home directory.

I like to have my home directory clean and would rather have this folder inside of ~/Games/DwarfFortress.

Some applications let you change directories such as the default for many configuration files:

XDG_CONFIG_HOME=~/.config

Is there a similar environment variable for Dwarf Fortress or is the path hard-coded into the game?
